Holding A Human Purpose: On Freeing The Force of Free-Will

"Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education. Man is not a being who stands still, he is a being in the process of becoming. The more he enables himself to become, the more he fulfills his true mission."

—Rudolf Steiner

A human being's purpose is self-given.

Human life has only the purpose and direction that human beings give it. An individual's mission in the world is not predetermined. At each moment, it is the one chosen for him or herself.

We do not enter life with fixed orders.

It is, you can clearly see, mighty tricky territory we find ourselves in when we fall into the trap of believing that purpose is something to be discovered as opposed to created.

This false line of thinking has been proliferated alongside the New Age community, as it rises to popularity, so does the lie.

But the origins of this profound error go beyond mere so-called 'life purpose', they arose out of the idea of looking for the source of freedom in one's will, in the very notion of 'free will' itself.

In Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom, he clarifies this error with the bold but profoundly redeeming assertion that asking about the freedom of the will is nonsense.

The will resides deep down in the unconscious, and radiates from the depths of our soul. One can only speak of the freedom of thought. Free thoughts must impulse the will, and then man is free.

The quality of the purpose a human being can provide for themselves directly corresponds to their connection to the spiritual. The ability to impart higher purpose is a reflection of this relationship.

One does not enrich their connection to the spiritual by absorbing as many thoughts as possible from the environment. These thoughts reproduce the outer world, a sensual-physical world, in images.

One becomes more spiritual through inner willful work within the thoughts.

It is imperative that we can discern between the thought content that comes to us from the environment and the power of the will that radiates from within us into the world of thought.

The stronger, and the more intense this flexing of the inner ray of will becomes in the element where the thoughts are, the more spiritual we become.

Perhaps the most common reason a person would consult an intuitive practitioner is to seek information pertaining to life purpose.

Even in light of all I've said in the previous paragraphs, it is still within the jurisdiction of the ethical and experienced practitioner to obtain information that is valuable and relative to life purpose, even if the querent does not yet understand how the context of what is intimated can be fully fashioned into this process of strengthening the impulses of the will from within the world of thought.

I share the belief that it is also the responsibility of the ethical practitioner to enlighten the querent to this greater context.

I will speak from personal experience as a seasoned and ethical intuitive practitioner, of a time in which I was consulted for matters related to life-purpose.

What follows comes from a session which I now call a Transmission, though it was previously termed Channeled Session for years.

In these sessions, I am reading the auric field and obtaining data pertaining to the thought content and the etheric and astral impulses of the querent as is standard practice in a purely psychic reading.

However, I am also interfacing with the beings and guiding spirits that are interwoven into the bodily organization, life and essential nature of the querent.

I spend an hour in a light trance or channelling state before speaking with the querent.

During this time, I am connecting with these soul essences and spiritual beings which are connected to this individual and obtaining the bulk of the information that is to be communicated.

When I am there, my perception of space and time is altered. It is a field that I navigate psychically. The organs of psychic perception act in similar ways which mirror, though not at all directly, my physical senses. By that I mean, for example, there is 'touch' but the experience of it is completely different than the way we experience touch as a sensual-physical experience.

Touch in this state precipates an immersive, web-like field of understanding and recognition. The quality of the movement of thought within my perception is in and of itself an act of communication.

The breadth, and depth, and thus the quality of the data that permeates my consciousness while in this state is fundamentally different than the thought-content referenced previously which one experiences on a day-to-day basis.

The information pertaining to life purpose during these sessions is difficult to understand outside of the context of the individual and his or her life, naturally, but the purpose of my writing this is to give some voice to this greater context to which I keep referring.

One last preface, however, for clarification's sake. There is always a certain degree of degradation in purity which occurs once this data permeates a human being acting as its initial recipient.

The recipient must then pass on that information, utilizing another 'chamber' so to speak of their own psychic circuitry, to finely meld it so that it lies within the fertile bed of the consciousness of the one to whom they are imparting the information so that it has the greatest chance of growing there.

One aspect of this process of degradation is what is commonly referred to as 'filters' which are a kind of, among other functions, categorical form of processing.

That said, now here we we are at a prime example.

I worked with someone who possessed distinct and graduated faculties for true artistic perception, by which I mean to say this person could perceive physical objects, animals, and human beings in a way that originated from and referenced the spiritual essences which gave the object or being its unique form and movement.

They did not consider themselves to be artistic, as a matter of fact, they found themselves to be distinctly driven by pragmatism.

Naturally not in every case, but in many, many cases of everyday experience for this person, what they understood to be discernment, deduction, and discrimination resulting from a pragmatic sensibility was in all actuality the result of supersensible perception and a degree, albeit subtle, of clairvoyance.

This person was very "particular", as they say. However, on the surface what appeared as merely a fierce commitment to good taste and a high value on order, was truly the result of their responding to the fact that they are incredibly sensitive to the essence and nature of all things in their environment.

A great deal of thought and energy had been consolidated around this endeavor of creating perfect conditions and environments over this person's lifetime. The context for which was a blend of a keen sense of pride and good fortune for naturally being one who values such things and the context which was inherited consequently from their religious upbringing and so on, and so on.

How would you begin to tell a person that the context by which they have constructed the better part of their self-concept is not wholly correct, in fact, is fundamentally incongruent with the truth of the reality of what's taking place within their being?

These days an unhealthy and dangerous aversion to the concept of hierarchy and superiority entirely is heavily encouraged. The fact nonetheless stands that those who develop their intuitive faculties properly can perceive information that those who do not are unable to perceive, even about themselves.

The point I'm making is that this individual could not truly set about giving their life purpose in a higher way, to which a distinction must be made. Higher in such a way that is beyond the construction of perfect environments and circumstances.

They were, ironically, ruled by their own profound sensitivity and faculties for spiritual perception but because they did not have the correct context to understand the basis of the reality of their own experience and motivations for what it was, a form of enslavement was brought about as a result of their own ignorance.

What resulted from our session was at best an incipient curiosity.

As ethical practitioners, we do our best to balance information and education so that the context becomes the cornerstone of the experience, however, curiosity is in many cases the best outcome we can work towards.

I will describe a hypothetical way in which, if the querent tended to the seed that was planted, their life would gradually change by their own volition and an ability to form this higher purpose would come as a natural consequence.

The most obvious change that would occur is that the individual would place an increasingly greater emphasis on artistic expression.

As a result, a liberation of the forces of the will would occur as does objectively for all engaged in genuine processes of transformation.

This would precipitate a change in the ability to engage in inner processing or active thought and the arrival of pure ideas in their inner thought-world.

Another obvious change, the quality of their health and overall vitality would steadily improve.

As the individual I'm speaking of is a woman, gradually her behavior would reflect less of an over-identification with the masculine and would become more balanced, being primarily situated within the feminine way of being.

What I am not by any means saying is that suddenly her purpose would be 'to become and to live as an artist'.

Rather, that by having greater understanding about herself, she can then imbue her life with higher purpose in an infinite number of truly creative ways.

What purpose she creates for herself is then liberated and exalted by way of truth and by way self-knowledge.

This individual did not need me, or any another intuitive, in order to possess this truth.

However, we are often the vehicle through which the seed is planted.

It is far more likely that a person, especially one who considers themselves to be more or less disinterested in spirituality, will come into contact with spiritual knowledge by way of another human being than through spiritual literature.

Truth is living and much of literature, even spiritual literature, is dead.

If you are considering consulting me or another intuitive practitioner with purpose in mind,

do remember: with purpose, and with all things, context is everything.

The cosmos is ordered. We are a living, breathing, creative composite of this order.

Lean into the understanding of this order, and the details which become the rudiments of what you call purpose will present themselves accordingly.

Yours In All,

nyo
